True Winter Color Palette

Short answer

True Winter (also called Cool Winter) is one of the 12 seasons in seasonal color analysis. True Winter is the coolest winter: crisp, blue-based and high-contrast. Pure white, black, royal blue and magenta look sharp; golden, earthy and muted colors can look dull.

01 — Character

True Winter at a glance

True Winter is the coolest winter: crisp, blue-based and high-contrast. There is often a clear gap between hair and skin — dark hair with light skin, or deep skin with bright eye whites — and that crispness is exactly what the palette mirrors. Pure white, black, royal blue and magenta look sharp; golden, earthy and muted colors tend to blur the face.

Contrast

Contrast is high. Black with white, or navy with one icy tint, is the core formula; a single saturated accent finishes it.

Deciding trait

Cool

Temperature decides first. True Winter is the purest cool version of Winter, with no lean toward a neighboring family — which is why it’s also called Cool Winter.

10 — Common misreads

Four things that make True Winter look like something else

01

Hair dye

Golden highlights soften True Winter’s contrast and can make Deep Winter — or even Deep Autumn — look closer. Check drapes at your natural roots.

02

Lighting

Warm light turns icy tints creamy. Compare icy pink and pure white in daylight before deciding you need warmer whites.

03

Tanning

A tan can make deeper True Winters look like Deep Winter or Deep Autumn for a while, though blue-red usually still beats tomato red.

04

Makeup

Warm bronzer reduces the contrast that makes black and white work. Test bare-faced, or with a blue-red lip.

11 — Colors to skip near the face

What may look heavy near your face

Camel, orange, mustard and dusty muted shades can look dull.

If you love one of these, wear it below the waist, or put a palette color at the neckline.

Looking “tired” in a color is a visual effect of contrast and reflected light, not a health signal.
