True Summer Color Palette

Short answer

True Summer (also called Cool Summer) is one of the 12 seasons in seasonal color analysis. True Summer is the coolest summer: rosy, blue-based and gently blended. Cool, softened colors like dusty rose, cornflower and spruce harmonize; orange, mustard and golden browns often clash.

01 — Character

True Summer at a glance

True Summer is the coolest summer: rosy, blue-based and gently blended. Skin often shows pink or rose undertones, hair tends toward ash brown or ash blonde without gold, and eyes are frequently soft blue, grey or cool brown. Blue-pinks, cornflower and spruce harmonize because they share that coolness without the sharp edge of winter brights.

Contrast

Contrast is low to medium. Cool mid-tones carry an outfit; save the deepest slate navy and blue charcoal for tailoring.

Deciding trait

Cool

Temperature decides first. True Summer is the purest cool version of Summer, with no lean toward a neighboring family — which is why it’s also called Cool Summer.

10 — Common misreads

Four things that make True Summer look like something else

01

Hair dye

Warm caramel or golden balayage can hide True Summer’s coolness. In drape tests, cover the hair or compare at your natural roots.

02

Lighting

Yellow indoor light makes blue-greys look dull and mustard look fine. Repeat the test in daylight before ruling cool colors out.

03

Tanning

A tan can make True Summer look closer to Soft Summer — or even Soft Autumn — for a while; blue-reds usually win again once it fades.

04

Makeup

A warm bronzer or peach blush can make cool drapes look mismatched. Test bare-faced, or with rose-toned makeup.

11 — Colors to skip near the face

What may look heavy near your face

Orange, mustard, rust and golden browns tend to clash.

If you love one of these, wear it below the waist, or put a palette color at the neckline.

Looking “tired” in a color is a visual effect of contrast and reflected light, not a health signal.
