Short or long? Bangs or not?

Compare in two steps. First, try three lengths on the same photo — chin, collarbone and upper chest. Then, at your favorite length, compare no bangs, curtain bangs and wispy bangs.

Bangs depend on forehead, cowlicks, hairline, how oily your hair gets and curl. Curtain bangs are the easiest to grow out. Short hair isn’t automatically low-maintenance — try clip-in bangs or pin your hair up before you cut.

Fine, straight hair falls flat at the crown, so a cut built on volume will fight you every morning. Thick curly hair expands at the sides, so it adds width whether you want it or not. Start from what your hair does naturally, then use length and layers to steer it toward your goal.

  • · To emphasize structure: a sleek blunt bob

Heart

  • · Add volume near the chin: layers or waves at jaw level

  • · Chin-to-shoulder lengths

Long

  • · To add width: shoulder length with side volume
  • · Bangs shorten the face visually
  • · Waves and curls at cheek level

Diamond

  • · Fullness at the forehead and chin
  • · Side-swept bangs
