01 — Character

Deep Winter at a glance

Deep Winter is winter at night: deep, cool-leaning and clear. Hair is usually dark brown to black, eyes are dark and defined, and skin of any depth reads neutral-cool beside them. Black, true red, emerald and sapphire hold their own against that depth, while dusty earth tones and golden browns can look muddy next to it.

Contrast

Contrast is high. Dark neutrals can sit right at the face; add a jewel tone or crisp white to keep the look clear rather than heavy.

Deciding trait

Deep

Depth decides first. Deep Winter sits at the deep end of the scale, so colors need enough weight to match dark hair and eyes; its Winter roots tip the palette cool.

10 — Common misreads

Four things that make Deep Winter look like something else

01

Hair dye

Warm chocolate or red-brown dye can make Deep Winter look like Deep Autumn. With your natural hair, compare black against espresso.

02

Lighting

Warm, dim restaurant light flatters bronze and rust. In daylight, check whether true red or tomato red looks cleaner.

03

Tanning

A tan warms the skin, so golden colors may seem to work for a while; cool jewel tones usually win again as it fades.

04

Makeup

A nude lip on a high-contrast face can make black look severe; a berry or true red lip shows how the palette is meant to work.

11 — Colors to skip near the face

What may look heavy near your face

Mustard, orange, camel and dusty earth tones can look muddy.

If you love one of these, wear it below the waist, or put a palette color at the neckline.

Looking “tired” in a color is a visual effect of contrast and reflected light, not a health signal.
